Primary Pupils / School Transport
An application form for free home to school transport, is provided on admission for parents to complete in order to apply for transport provision; parents of pupils who are not eligible for a bus pass or assistance with transport needs will be expected to make suitable transport arrangements themselves.
Your child may be able to get free transport to school depending on how far the walk is, any special needs they have and whether the walk is safe.
All children between five and sixteen qualify for free school transport, if they go to their nearest suitable school and live at least:
- Two miles from the school if they’re under eight.
- Three miles from the school if they’re eight or older.
Families on low incomes
If you get the maximum Working Tax Credit or your children are entitled to Free School Meals, they will get free school transport if they are :
- Aged eight to eleven and the school is at least two miles away.
- Aged eleven to sixteen and the school is two to six miles away – as long as there are not three or more suitable schools nearer to home.
- Aged eleven to sixteen and the school’s two to fifteen miles away – if it’s their nearest school preferred on the grounds of religion or belief.
Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Your child is entitled to free transport if they cannot walk to school because of their SEND or a mobility problem, it does not matter how far away they live. Please contact Transport Services on 01422 393532 for further information.
If there is no safe walking route.
Children aged five to sixteen must be given free transport if they go to their nearest suitable school and there’s no safe walking route, however far away they live. Contact your local council if you think the walking route is not safe.
Secondary Pupils – TWAPA Transport Provision
As of September, we will have two minibuses for transport. Pupils who board the minibus in the morning will be given priority in the afternoon for the return journey. Where appropriate, we will prioritise younger pupils accessing the minibus. All other pupils will be expected to make their own way to school. Face masks will be mandatory on the minibus for all pupils.
The first minibus will do a daily run from Holywell Green, by the Fish & Chip Shop, at 08:00, arrive at Elland for 08:15, then Brighouse for 08:25 – arriving at school for 08:50.
The second minibus will do two runs per morning; the first run will be from Southowram at 08:00, to Halifax Town Centre at 08:15, arriving at school for 08:30 – this run will be for Key Stage 3 pupils only.
