SEND

At The Whitley AP Academy our expectations are high for all our pupils and we are committed to providing an inclusive ethos, environment and culture where all pupils will thrive. All pupils are challenged and supported to achieve the best they can. The academy believes that all pupils have an entitlement to a broad and balanced education and should be integrated fully into all aspects of the academy. This should be done without stigma, prejudice or discrimination.

There is a balance between pupil-led and teacher-initiated activities in all classrooms and students who need additional support are quickly identified through the highly skilled expertise of Teaching staff and Behaviour for Learning Mentors.

Teachers utilise different personalised ways of supporting pupils. Pupils use visual resources, models, scaffolds and practical learning to enhance their time in the classroom. Teachers and the Behaviour for Learning team work together to support the delivery of our personalised curriculum and to ensure pupils are challenged to be independent learners.

All pupils have a personal Behaviour Management Plan and Provision Map which enables all staff to support pupils with their learning and also their social, emotional and mental health needs. The rewards system in place ensures all pupils are celebrated when showing resilience, taking responsibility, being able to reflect and show respect.

All pupils are taught in small groups which allows for targeted support. Interventions focus on the support of EHCP outcomes, Literacy and Numeracy and are led by experienced teachers.

The Academy follows the agreed guidelines in the SEND Code of Practice. We believe that, in order to identify, assess and provide effectively for pupils’ special educational needs, there should be effective collaboration between the student, staff at the Academy, parents /carers and other outside agencies. In meeting the special educational needs and / or disabilities of all pupils, the Academy will have full regard to the views of the parents/carers and the child.
