Primary Students
As part if the student admission process, parents and carers are provided with an application form for free home to school transport. Parents and carers of students who are not eligible for a bus pass or assistance with transport needs will be expected to make suitable transport arrangements themselves.
Your child may be eligible for free transport to school depending on: how far the walk is, any special needs they have and whether the walk is safe.
All children between 5 and 16 qualify for free school transport if they attend their nearest suitable school and live at least:
- Two miles from the school if they are under 8
- Three miles from the school if they are 8 or older.
Â
Families on low incomes
If you receive the maximum Working Tax Credit or your children are entitled to free school meals, they will be entitled to free school transport if they are:
- Aged 8 to 11 and the school is at least two miles away.
- Aged 11 to 16 and the school is two to six miles away – as long as there are not three or more suitable schools nearer to home.
- Aged 11 to 16 and the school is two to fifteen miles away – if it’s their nearest school preferred on the grounds of religion or belief.
Â
Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Your child is entitled to free transport if they cannot walk to school because of their SEND or a mobility problem; it does not matter how far away they live. Please contact Calderdale Council’s Transport Operations Team on 01422 393532 for further information.
Â
If there is no safe walking route
Children aged 5 to 16 must be given free transport if they attend their nearest suitable school and there is no safe walking route, however far away they live. Please contact Calderdale Council’s Transport Operations Team on 01422 393532 if you think the walking route is not safe.

Secondary Pupils
As of September, we will have two minibuses for transport. Students who board the minibus in the morning will be given priority in the afternoon for the return journey. Where appropriate, we will prioritise younger pupils accessing the minibus. All other pupils will be expected to make their own way to school.
The first minibus will run daily from Holywell Green, by the fish & chip shop at 08:00, arriving at Elland at 08:15, then Brighouse at 08:25 – arriving at school at 08:50.
The second minibus will do two runs per morning; the first run will be from Southowram at 08:00, to Halifax Town Centre at 08:15, arriving at school at 08:30 – this run will be for Key Stage 3 students only.
